Townscaper is a quaint little casual video game wherein you can create your dream island town. Developed by Raw Fury, this 3D indie sandbox game is a relaxing city-builder title that allows you to get creative with how you craft the ideal home for a community.

Similar to Dofromantik, Townscaper is more of a game for you to play around with—rather than one that has actual goals and challenges to complete. You’re given various tools to create different designs and the gameplay mechanics allow for more flexibility in your creativity. 

How do you play Townscaper?

In Townscaper, you’re given the task of building various island towns composed of stone foundations, bridges, tile-roofed houses, and the like. Simply click on the water to place the start of your cobblestone foundation and begin adding various parts for your design. There’s no goal to reach: just keep building until you’re satisfied with your coastal town. Thus, your work can either be quaint islands or massive infrastructures. 

What’s great about this game is that its sandbox design is meant to be a relaxing experience for all—letting you simply play around. The grid system for each block is shaped in a unique irregular polygon that curves, so the roads and buildings never feel rigid. Each part also changes its look based on what it’s connected to, so you can spawn things like gardens and stairways automatically.

However, the game’s algorithm for establishing how a part looks doesn’t fully cater to all players. For one, you can color these parts but there’s no option to manually customize how they look. Thus, you can get windows or doors that are asymmetrical in terms of placement to another wall’s windows and doors. There’s also no other grid shape available, such as those without curves.

An easy city-builder game

All in all, Townscaper is a lovely little building game for those who have some time on their hands. While there’s not a lot of customization available, the automatic changes to the building components’ appearance and the grid’s unique shape make for colorful and lively designs you can easily create. This game can be played on both PC, mobile, and other console platforms.
